April 11th, 2024
Jemma Wadham, director of the iC3 polar research centre, has been elected as a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, joining its geological sciences group. The academy was founded in 1857 and represents Norwegian science at home and abroad, organises international meetings and symposia, and publishes scientific studies.
The iC3 centre drives global efforts to quantify how ice sheets influence Earth’s carbon cycle, climate and ocean ecosystems in the past, present and future. In addition to acting as the centre’s director, Jemma also leads a research unit that is comprehensively mapping nutrient and carbon fluxes in Greenland and Antarctica to allow reliable assessments of how the retreat of polar ice sheets will affect Earth’s future climate and marine ecosystems.
In addition to numerous scientific publications, she has also authored the book Ice Rivers, a passionate eyewitness account of the mysteries and looming demise of glaciers. She has worked in theatre, film and animation and contributes regularly to news pieces, TV, and radio. Please visit Jemma’s website for more information about her research, acting and writing.
