Biogeochemical cycling from ice to ocean

iC3 Field School in the Lyngen Alps

Participants in the iC3 field course will live and work next to a glacier in the Lyngen Alps near Tromsø. The course will cover the entire ice to ocean spectrum, with terrestrial and marine-based fieldwork in the glacial forefield, along the valley and in the fjord.

RU1: Carbon and ice sheets

iC3 are for the first time quantifying the extensive stores of carbon and methane hydrate beneath present-day ice sheets. We are drilling deep boreholes in the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and performing geochemical and microbiological analyses of the extracted ice and sediments.

Nobody knows how much carbon is stored beneath ice sheets or how much will be released as the earth continues to warm.

RU2: Methane, nutrients and carbon

iC3 are regularly measuring the methane, nutrients and organic carbon released in glacial runoff from Svalbard and Greenland over a period of ten years, along the entire trajectory the water takes from ice sheets to the fjords.

iC3's aim is to drive major breakthroughs in the understanding of ice sheet impacts on ocean carbon cycles and ecosystems.
