Polar MAGIC laboratory welcomes microbiology and biogeochemistry collaborations

January 25th, 2025

The Polar MAGIC lab is now online and open to collaborations with all those involved in academic research.

The lab focuses on the microbiology and biogeochemistry of cold aquatic environments. It is based within the iC3 Polar Research Hub at Tromsø university, Norway.

Polar MAGIC complements other infrastructure and facilities connected with iC3, including Antarctic and Arctic research stations, research vessels, and strong modelling capacity.

The main activities of the Polar MAGIC lab are:

  1. Chemical analysis of samples from naturally occurring ice and freshwaters
  2. Culturing microbes found in cold environments and prepping samples for genetic analyses
  3. Low-temperature experimentation

Lab facilities and services cover:

·       Preparation

·       Chemical analysis

·       Microbiology

·       Bespoke experimental setups
