Award-winning science journalist joins iC3 polar research hub
May 22nd, 2024
A science journalist specialised in the polar regions has been awarded a grant to embed with researchers at the iC3 centre in Tromso for several months this autumn.
The award will enable Jacopo Pasotti to follow iC3 researchers’ fieldwork in Arctic Norway and document the analysis of samples in the new Polar MAGIC geosciences laboratory. He will be based at iC3’s offices in Tromso throughout this period.
Jacopo Pasotti’s reporting has long focused on the frozen parts of the planet.
He has written several popular science books and has been on assignment in Antarctica, at the North Pole and in the Himalayas. He will spend his time at iC3 learning more about the global carbon cycle, interviewing researchers, and preparing story leads.
Till Bruckner, communications manager for iC3, said:
“We are delighted to be able to welcome Jacopo to the team later this year. The links between ice sheets, carbon cycles and ocean ecosystems are complex, but will have a profound impact on life on earth. Jacopo is the perfect person to explain the science and its implications to a broader audience.”
“We have already invited Jacopo to join our new PhD students at the iC3 Field School in the Lyngen Alps near Tromso in September. We look forward to many interesting discussions around the campfire below Steindalsbreen glacier.”
The ERC-supported FRONTIERS Residency program enables journalists to spend 3 to 5 months at a European research institution. Jacopo Pasotti and iC3 were one of only seven journalist-institution partnerships from across Europe to win a program grant this year.
iC3 is an interdisciplinary research centre based at UiT the Arctic University of Norway that seeks to answer some of the biggest questions in polar research. iC3 is partnered with the Norwegian Polar Institute and NORCE.
